Meal Makeover

I have always been interested in doing and creating things, but fearing my doingness and createability, I have often shied away from trying new interests and especially exposing my attempts to others. That mode of life is not really working for me anymore, so here is my attempt at trying something new.

Blankets, bags, bites and now blogs are a few of my interests and I would like to take the opportunity to share them with all of you. Bites, as in food, is one thing that I have enjoyed for as long as I can remember. I have always enjoyed making food, especially desserts, but I have not always been that fabulous at it. But I didn't fear, because I thought that when I got married that somehow, magically, I would have all the cooking know-how I needed and that dinner would easily get prepared every night, just like it did in my house growing up. But for some reason, as I am sure many of you have noticed, dinner never seems to make itself and appear beautifully on the set table, awaiting my family's hungry bellies. I have now been married for almost five years and I still struggle with the never ending question of "what to make for dinner?" Even when I get a good idea, it never seems like I have the right ingredients. But recently, I found a secret that I would love to share with everyone I know... and everyone I don't know. The secret is Shirley J.

Shirley J is a 30 year old company that started a line of products to help ease the stress of everyday cooking. The Shirley J company was recently purchased by new owners, namely my husbands uncle, Joel Neilsen, which is how I learned of it's existence, and it is striving to help people everywhere discover, or rediscover, the joy of cooking.

For the past two weeks I have been trying out a few of my new Shirley J products and I have noticed something amazing happening. First, I look forward to dinner time and second, my husband, Chad, has been delighted to come home to a prepared dinner and delighted to have something delicious to take to work the next day for lunch. These changes have truly made a world of difference in my everyday attitude.

One of the products that Shirley J is most known for is their Signature Cream Soup/Sauce base. This
base is amazing! It has given me the missing link I needed to help make dinner happen. A few of the things that I have made so far are potato broccoli chowder, cauliflower cheese casserole, asparagus chicken noodle casserole, and black bean and green chile casserole. All of which I either made without a recipe or I improved a recipe by adding Shirley J products. That's right, I made up my very own recipes and they were delicious.

Everyday as I think about "what's for dinner?" I get excited, because my mindset has changed. I am now using my creativity and thinking about what I can put together and how I can use the cream base in a new way. It has truly become such a fun part of my day and I find that I am able to use my grocery store purchases more easily, particularly my produce items.
